Golfers Go Low to Beat Morristown

By Brad Baughman | Aug 25, 2022 10:48 PM

None of the five Brown County High School golfers who made the trip to Blue Bear Golf Course in Shelbyville for a Thursday afternoon match with Morristown High School had ever played the course before. The Eagles were undaunted, however, and recorded their best nine hole score of the season to defeat the host Yellowjackets 199 to 247. Leading the Eagle charge was senior Hannah deWeerdt who fired a season best 44 to claim medalist honors. Just three strokes behind her was sophomore Lilly VanNess with a 47. Freshman Chloe Poling helped in the scoring with a season best 53, and fellow freshman Ava Stogsdill contributed a 55. Junior Savannah Poling turned in a 61. "Hannah was really dialed in today. Her swing looked smooth and efficient, and she never found herself in any real trouble," said co-coach Brad Baughman. "To have her 44 and Lilly's 47 and then get a 53 and 55 from Chloe and Ava, two players brand new to the sport, bodes well for us as we head into the last three weeks of the season," added Baughman. Brown County will compete in the WIC championships Saturday, August 27, at Forrest Park Golf Course in Brazil. The Eagles, who were the conference runner-up last season, will be paired with Edgewood High School and Northview High School and will tee off at 9:00 A.M.
